One of the few bakeries in Hong Kong which could make us yearn for their breads, Urban Bakery is surely one of our must-try spots. We bought quite a range of their breads during our previous visit and this time round, we wanted to make our calories worth by giving their gourmet sandwiches a go. There were no facilities for a proper dine-in at the original bakery down at Hysan Place, Causeway Bay but we would not mind to have it on the go as long as it tastes good!
Are the sandwiches as good as their breads?
Japanese 5oz Wagyu beef brioche burger with mushroom duxelle & breadcrumb sand (HK$100/-)
Only 10 pieces of these treats were made in stall each day and upon learning that, we thought that there was no way we would give it a miss! The combination was simply brilliant, starting with the soft brioche that served as the sandwich bread. It had a rich buttery fragrance to it and a crisp surface coupled with a fluffy soft inside.

The diced mushrooms still maintained firmness and were succulent to say the least. The highlight of this sandwich was no doubt the Wagyu beef patty which was carefully selected by the fine chefs and pan-fried upon ordering. It was juicy and cooked beautifully, on the side of being medium-cooked. We felt that however it lacked a strong enough beefy taste as the flavours were subtly sweet and mild. It suited our palate but for those who crave a heavier touch in flavours, you might be disappointed. The best part was the generous portion of crispy breadcrumbs which added a lovely layer of texture to the savoury sandwich. Our only complaint was that it lacked greens so while the sandwich make a calories-worthy lunch, the diet-conscious folks might need to find their daily 5-a-day elsewhere.
Verdict: 8.5/10
Langoustine with curry emulsion (HK$40/-)
Langoustine is also commonly known as the Norway Lobster and is reputedly one of the most commercial crustacean in Europe. Urban Bakery is well known for their croissants so we were expecting this to be good. Hmm..the croissant was not quite as crispy as the freshly baked ones that we somewhat grew accustomed to, having been regular patrons. It was on the soft side though the rich buttery taste remained intact. We however struggled to explore the curry emulsion as the flavours seemed too mild for acceptance but we enjoyed the creaminess of the dressing. The langoustine was rather disappointing though, leaving a slightly fishy after-taste which we did not quite appreciate. It was an 'okay' sandwich on the whole though the consensus was that the Wagyu beef was a lot better.
Verdict: 6.5/10
Do expect to wait for your sandwiches as they are made to order and prepared fresh before you!
